In global apparel manufacturing, a single measurement mismatch or missing trim specification can ruin an entire production batch, leading to rejected shipments, costly re-works, and damaged buyer trust.
A Garment Specification Sheet (Spec Sheet)—the core component of a Tech Pack—serves as the single source of truth between fashion brands, merchandisers, and factory floor managers. Whether you are producing woven garments, knits, or denim, sending a buyer-ready spec sheet ensures complete clarity across sample development and bulk production.
This guide details the essential elements of an export-ready garment spec sheet, includes POM measuring instructions, and provides 5 complete measurement templates across Men, Women, Boys, Girls, and Toddlers.
What is a Garment Spec Sheet?
A garment spec sheet is a technical document containing precise measurements, construction details, fabric specifications, bill of materials (BOM), and tolerance limits for a specific garment design. It acts as a contractual blueprint for the factory to produce identical garments across all sizes and colorways.
Without an accurate spec sheet, factory merchandisers are forced to make assumptions during pattern-making, leading to sample rejection and delay in shipment schedules.
Key Components of an Export-Grade Garment Spec Sheet
- Header Information & Style Details: Style Number/Name, Season (e.g., S/S 2027), Garment Category, Target Size Run (XS–3XL), Date, and Version Control.
- Point of Measurement (POM) Table: Exact guidelines and codes (e.g., POM-01, POM-02) specifying where measurements are taken.
- Grading Rules: Defines measurement increments/decrements across sizes relative to the base sample size.
- Manufacturing Tolerances: Acceptable margins of error (+/-). For woven garments, standard tolerance ranges between ± 0.3 cm to ± 0.8 cm.
- Bill of Materials (BOM): Details for fabric composition, GSM, sewing thread, labels, zippers, and trims.
How to Read & Measure POM Codes
POM (Point of Measurement) codes represent standardized inspection points on a garment to avoid miscommunication between foreign buyers and factory lines:
- POM-01 (Total Body Length / HPS): Measured straight down from the High Point Shoulder (intersection of neck seam and shoulder) to the bottom hem edge.
- POM-02 (Chest / Bust Width): Measured flat across the garment, exactly 1 inch (2.5 cm) below the armhole seam, side to side.
- POM-03 (Waist Width): Measured flat across the narrowest point of the waist area.
- POM-04 (Shoulder Width): Measured straight across the back from shoulder seam point to shoulder seam point.
- POM-05 (Sleeve Length): Measured along the outer edge from the shoulder seam down to the cuff/hem edge.
- POM-06 (Sweep / Hem Opening): Measured flat across the very bottom opening from edge to edge.

Common Spec Sheet Errors That Cause Shipment Delays
- Ignoring Fabric Shrinkage: Failing to factor in wash/dye shrinkage before cutting fabric leads to undersized finished garments after laundering.
- Vague Seam & Stitching Instructions: Simply writing “stitch” instead of specifying ISO stitch codes (e.g., ISO 401 chainstitch, ISO 602 flatlock) causes miscommunication on the sewing line.
- Missing Reference Diagrams: Measurement numbers without visual callout lines cause quality inspectors to measure from incorrect reference points.
